The Seibu Railway Series 101 was introduced in 1969 to coincide with the opening of the Seibu Chichibu Line and equipped with a high-power motor and speed suppression brakes suitable for running on mountainous lines, it developed into one of Seibu's most famous commuter trains. In 1979, the new Series 101 was born with minor changes to the front design and other features. In 1996, the beige colour around the windows was discontinued and replaced with a new paint colour. The new Series 101 are still in service on branch line sections of the Seibu Railway.
